Jair Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities determined he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under domestic detention.

The ex-president was found guilty of planning a government overthrow in last fall and handed more than over two decades in jail, but he continued under confinement pending court reviews.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after recent developments emerged.

This involved trying to remove his ankle monitor and a invitation to a demonstration that could "allow for a chance to flee".

Judicial Records Show Escape Risks

In a document approving the arrest, the magistrate said data from the unit overseeing the former president's confinement suggested the former leader's "intention to break the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his getaway".

The former president was convicted of heading a conspiracy aimed at maintaining his control after he was defeated in the presidential race to his left-wing rival, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Top judicial officials said that he knew of a plot which involved plans to kill the current president and his running partner, Geraldo Alckmin, and to arrest and execute Justice Moraes - the High Court judge who has been managing the former president's case.

The scheme was stopped because it didn't receive the backing of the military leaders. The current president was inaugurated without problem on the first day of 2023.

But a following week, on 8 January, many his followers stormed and vandalised public facilities in the federal district, the capital city.

The security forces intervened and around 1,500 people were arrested.

The magistrates found that the protesters had been encouraged by him whose strategy, they said, was for the Brazilian military to intervene, restore order and return him to office.

At the time, his attorneys called the decades-long sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also prohibited from running for public office until the year 2060 - eight years after the end of his sentence.
